Overview

The Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) plays a critical role in promoting the health, safety, and regulatory compliance of the healthcare workforce across the organization. The OHN is responsible for the prevention, evaluation, and management of occupational injuries and illnesses, ensuring alignment with OSHA, ADA, FMLA, CDC, and state health department regulations. This role also supports the organization’s infection control, employee wellness, and medical surveillance programs.

Responsibilities

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Injury and Illness Prevention & Response:

·         Develops, implements, and maintains occupational and employee health policies to ensure a safe work environment across hospital and clinic settings.

·         Coordinates care and case management for occupational injuries and illnesses in collaboration with third-party administrators (TPAs), providers, and department leadership.

·         Leads return-to-work planning, including light-duty assignments, to support timely and safe reintegration into the workplace.

·         Maintains OSHA 300 logs and ensures timely reporting of workplace injuries and illnesses.

Leave Management & ADA Coordination:

·         Administers the organization’s Leave of Absence program, including determination of eligibility under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and coordination with TPAs.

·         Supports and documents the ADA interactive process, including review of medical documentation, collaboration with stakeholders, identification of reasonable accommodations, and follow-up evaluations.

Infection Control & Surveillance:

·         Coordinates TB screening, communicable disease monitoring, and post-exposure follow-up based on CDC and state public health guidelines.

·         Collects and submits required vaccination and health data to CMS via NHSN or other applicable reporting platforms.

·         Participates in infection control policy development and supports incident response related to infectious disease exposure or outbreaks.

Employee Screening & Wellness:

·         Performs pre-employment health assessments and reviews medical clearance documentation to ensure job-related fitness for duty.

·         Administers and evaluates post-accident, reasonable suspicion, and random drug and alcohol screens in accordance with NARMC’s policy.

·         Conducts respirator fit testing and maintains appropriate documentation in compliance with OSHA 1910.134 standards.

·         Promotes health education and wellness initiatives to reduce risk and enhance employee safety and satisfaction.

Records Management & Compliance:

·         Maintains confidential employee health records in accordance with HIPAA, ADA, and OSHA regulations.

·         Ensures data integrity and documentation related to occupational health services, immunizations, and testing.

·         Monitors regulatory changes and adjusts internal procedures to ensure ongoing compliance.

Communication & Collaboration:

·         Serves as a key liaison between HR, Infection Prevention, Safety, and department leaders on matters related to employee health and safety.

·         Provides consultation and guidance to leadership on emerging occupational health concerns and trends.

Additional Duties:

·         Performs other duties as assigned to support the health and productivity of the workforce.

Qualifications

Required:

  • ASN
  • 3 Years' experience in occupational health or related field
  • Current RN license in the state of Arkansas or compact state
  • BLS and ACLS from the American Heart Association
  • Excellent assessment skills
  • Ability to use the nursing process to assess, plan, and evaluate employee illnesses and work related injuries
  • Good Understanding of infection control practice

Preferred:

  • BSN or other health related bachelor's degree
  • 5 years or more experience in occupational health or related field
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Current COHN or COHN-S certification - if not currently certified, must be willing to obtain certification when criteria is met
  • Previous experience related to employee health, population health, infection control, public health and/or wellness.
