Overview

Responsible for the monitoring of patients
Assesses and reports the patient’s monitoring and/or life threatening events to medical/nursing staff
Also responsible for documenting and posting rhythm strips into patient record
Works under the direction of an RN
Utilizing a team approach and under the supervision and administration of the Charge Nurse, the Monitor Tech will perform the following duties on the nursing unit:

 

Responsibilities

  • Answer telephones courteously and professionally and relay accurate messages appropriately.
  • Make appointments for patients.      
  • Assist patients in making and receiving phone calls.
  • Help answer patient call system and contact needed nursing personnel.
  • Act as a receptionist on the unit. Receive and direct visitors.
  • Assemble and break down charts. Graph temperatures, blood pressure, pulse, respirations, weights and diet. Check chart for completeness.
  • Requisition supplies and nourishment.
  • Check orders, transcribe if requested, and notify nurse of stat or now orders. Fax to pharmacy.
  • Requisition labs and x-rays as ordered. Make results available for physician or nurse.
  • Complete required daily reports.
  • Assist with late trays, delivering if necessary.
  • Deliver specimens to lab and mail to departmental mailboxes when necessary.
  • Maintain patient rights and confidentiality.
  • Other duties assigned by charge nurse to facilitate the continuity of patient care.
  • Able to recognize arrhythmias correctly and notify RN of potentially dangerous rhythms.
  • Accurately completes telemetry report and sends to telemetry units each shift and logs patient’s telemetry information correctly.
  • Must keep patient alarms activated.
  • Accounts for telemetry units every shift.
  • Ensure adequate supplies of batteries and ECG paper.

Qualifications

Education:

 

High School graduate is preferred, but may have its equivalent.

Must attend arrhythmia course and pass with at least 80%.

Must take telemetry competency annually and pass with at least 80%.

 

Experience:

 

Previous hospital experience with some knowledge of medical terms is desirable.

 

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:

 

CPR required only if the individual also provides direct

patient care (i.e. CNA/LPN cross-trained as Monitor Tech/Unit Secretary or vice-versa.)

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

Must be able to identify life threatening arrhythmias (vtach/vent defibrillation).

Must have sufficient knowledge of the English language.

Must have sufficient knowledge to transcribe Physician’s orders, make out requisitions, reports, maintain simple records and perform various related clerical tasks.

Pertinent in-services as requested by Nurse Manager.

Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English
