C.N.A.

Responsible for performing simple specified nursing duties related to patient care, such as bathing, vital signs, enemas, non-sterile surgical dressings and patient observation

Assists in preparation of supplies and maintain cleanliness and order on the nursing unit

Utilizing a cooperative team approach with the supervision and direction of the RN, and with previous training, the nurse technician will perform the following duties on the nursing unit.

Utilizing a cooperative team approach with the supervision and direction of the RN, and with previous training, the nurse technician will perform the following duties on the nursing unit.

 

Responsibilities

C.N.A.

  • Vital sign monitoring (B/P, Temperatures (all), Pulse, Resp)
  • Bed bath (complete and partial)
  • Tub bath
  • Bed making (unoccupied, occupied and surgery)
  • Oral hygiene care (conscious and unconscious patients)
  • Care of patient’s teeth
  • Care of patient’s hair, shaving, fingernail care, foot care
  • Keeps unit clean and neat
  • Answers lights promptly and with courtesy
  • Cleans and makes unit ready to receive new patients
  • Admits and discharges patient
  • Identifies patient properly
  • Assists with lifting correctly
  • Proper use of wheelchair and transfer of patient to wheelchair
  • Transfer of patient from bed to stretcher and transport
  • Range of motion exercises and turning patient and proper body alignment in bed
  • Measuring height
  • Weighing patient with bed scales and regular scales
  • Passing and picking up trays
  • Documentation of intake (oral, supplements, snacks & meals)
  • Gives and removes bedpans and urinals
  • Measures outputs (urine, Levine’s, drainage tubes, stool)
  • Admits patient with orientation to call light, T.V. control, telephone, bill of rights and completes clothing list
  • Observes patient’s condition and reports abnormal reactions and changes in patient condition to supervisor immediately
  • Collects specimens (urine, stool and sputum)
  • Post mortem care
  • Demonstrates knowledge of how to use equipment pertaining to patient care.  How to maintain and clean equipment
  • Application of restraints, documentation on flow sheet of checks of restraints
  • CPR certification and Heimlich maneuver
  • Use of mechanical patient lift
  • Able to answer telephone courtesy and professionally
  • Completes assignments in a timely manner
  • Cooperates with members of the medical team in coordinating patient’s total care needs
  • Performs and responds appropriately & effectively in emergency situations
  • Demonstrates effective communication methods & skills
  • Uses the lines of authority appropriately
  • Communicates effectively with patients and families
  • Dresses appropriately and meets hygiene standards
  • Practices cost containment
  • Demonstrates professional medical care to the sick & disabled without regard to race, sex, age, creed, religion or inability to pay
  • Has knowledge and demonstrates appropriate care for patient’s growth and developmental needs
  • Transports patients to other areas
  • Performs pulse oximetry
  • Applies Cardiac monitor
  • Does ACCU Blood Glucose checks
  • Follows through on tests or procedures left from a previous shift & reports any incomplete assignments to assure continuity of care
  • Has knowledge and demonstrates appropriate care of nutrition needs
  • Demonstrates appropriate care in regard to patient’s cultural beliefs, values and religion

Nurse Tech I

  • All duties that may be assigned to a nurse aid.
  • All duties that may be assigned to a unit secretary.
  • Assist with admission assessment.
  • Care and maintenance of various drainage tubes.
  • Wound care only Stage 2 and less.
  • Charting of patient care given and special treatments performed.
  • Removals of IV, SL only after procedure has been supervised 3X.
  • Removal of Foley catheter only after procedure has been supervised 3X.
  • Obtain sterile urine from Foley catheter only after procedure has been supervised 3X.
  • Wound culture.
  • Insert Foley (Foley will be inserted only after this is covered in their nursing program and has been supervised 3X.

or

 

Nurse Tech II

  • All duties that may be assigned to a nurse aid.
  • Assist with admission assessment.
  • Care and maintenance of various drainage tubes. Will not care for any tube he/she has not been checked off on.
  • Wound care. Technique supervised 3X. Nurse tech will be shown the first time wound care is performed for any new patient.
  • Preps and douches
  • Charting of patient care given and special treatments performed.
  • Assists in developing care plans (will have care plan co-signed by a supervising RN)
  • Removals of IV, SL only after procedure has been supervised 3X.
  • Removal of Foley catheter only after procedure has been supervised 3X.
  • Obtain sterile urine from Foley catheter only after procedure has been supervised 3X.
  • Surgery preps
  • Doctor’s orders (under RN supervision)
  • Wound culture.
  • Insert Foley (Foley will be inserted only after this is covered in their nursing program and has been supervised 3X.
  • Oral suction (only after this is covered in their nursing program and supervised 3X.

Qualifications

Nurse Tech I

 

Required

Preferred

Education:

Is a student in good standing in a licensed nursing program and has completed a minimum of 1 full semester of nursing classes and has started hospital clinical.

 

Experience:

 

 

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:

BLS certification

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Completed CNA checklist

Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English

 

 

or

 

Nurse Tech II

 

Required

Preferred

Education:

Is a student in good standing in a licensed nursing program and has completed a minimum of 2 full semesters of nursing classes.  Participating in clinical.

 

Experience:

 

 

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:

BLS required

ACLS and PALS encouraged

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Post orientation; demonstrate knowledge as to patient care, medications, ability to recognize emergency situations then take appropriate actions.

Completed CNA checklist and is working on Nurse Tech checklist

Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English

Needs to have completed nurse aide course or shows on-job training period and demonstrates ability to perform duties assigned to aide

 

Experience:

 

 

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:

CNA certification

BLS required re-certification every 2 years

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Must exhibit ability to read and understand written instructions as well as comprehend verbal instructions.

Demonstrates sympathy, understanding, and tact in working with patients, families and co-workers.

Shows initiative and judgment in giving patient care.

Needs to have completed nurse aide course or shows on-job training period and demonstrates ability to perform duties assigned to aide
