Overview

An anesthesia technician  is an allied healthcare worker who assists with the administration and monitoring of anaesthesia and has an extensive knowledge of anaesthesia techniques, instruments, supplies, and technology.

Responsibilities

  • Operates, calibrates, and performs routine maintenance on a variety of technical equipment used in the OR.
  • Identifies malfunctioning equipment, trouble shoots equipment problems, and refers more serious equipment problems to appropriate technical repair personnel.
  • Assists in the establishment and maintenance of a regular schedule of proper maintenance and calibration of monitors utilized in the administration of anesthesia.
  • Organizes and manages the general functioning of the anesthesia workroom.  Cleans, decontaminates and sterilizes equipment in accordance with the CDC guidelines, to prevent the spread of infectious and contagious diseases.  Stocks the anesthesia workstations.
  • Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies.  Coordinates inventory and ordering of supplies with the materials coordinator.
  • Assists anesthesia providers in setting up supplies and equipment in preparation for surgical cases.  This may include IV sets, pressure monitoring lines or epidurals.
  • Assists in positioning and supporting patients for regional anesthesia such as spinals or epidurals.
  • Is knowledgeable of aseptic techniques for blood collection and use of equipment such as blood gas kits and hemacue device.
  • Performs daily safety pre-operative checkout of each anesthesia delivery machine prior to its initial morning use.
  • Assists anesthesia personnel in Aturnover@ activities between each surgical case.
  • Able to care for patients of all ages, adapt, modify within established guidelines.

Qualifications

Degrees, Licensure and/or Certifications:

 

BLS certification from AHA required

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

Possesses a practical knowledge of basic instruments and treatment procedures commonly used in the administration of anesthesia.
