Overview

Assesses, diagnoses and treats speech, language, cognitive, communication, voice, swallowing, fluency and other related disorders

Keeps records, monitors progress, and counsels patients and their family members

Responsibilities

  • Maintains accountability to the Director of Rehabilitation Services.
  • Provides input to the director regarding goals, plans, needs, new programs, improvements and methods to accomplish.
  • Exhibits knowledge of and complies with state regulations.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and skill in speech production, intelligibility, voice production, laryngeal function and respiratory-phonate ability.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of assessing reading, writing and spelling ability and treating disorders.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of neurological conditions and motor speech disorders in children and adults.
  • Determines the appropriateness of treatment based on a potential for functional improvement in a reasonable and generally predictable period of time.
  • Prepares discharge summaries which include an assessment of the effectiveness of the treatment, specific outcome statements and recommendations for further treatment and management.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the medical diagnosis, cognitive and linguistic characteristics contributing to dysphasia.
  • Familiar with normal and pathological laryngeal anatomy, physiology and medical terminology as it pertains to laryngeal disorders and techniques of voice treatment.
  • In-services nursing staff as needed regarding communication and/or swallow issues.
  • Ability to conduct a Modified Barium Swallow examination, interpret results and plan treatment based on results.
  • Completes quarterly quality reports.
  • Maintains performance improvement date monthly.

 

Enters daily charges on the tally sheet.

Qualifications

Education:

 

Master’s Degree from approved school of SLP.

 

Degrees, Licensure and/or Certifications"

 

Current State License and certificate of clinical competency.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

Selects continuing education programs relevant to the department.

Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English
