Overview

Provides professional nursing care by utilizing the nursing process to care for patient within an assigned unit.

 

Coordinates care planning with other disciplines

 

Under the supervision and administration of the Nurse Manager or Charge Nurse of assigned Unit, the Staff RN is responsible for the nursing care in an assigned nursing unit or a portion of a nursing unit.

Responsibilities

  • All communications with patient and families must be in a friendly and caring manner.
  • Supervises and assists in the admission of the patient to the Outpatient Surgery Unit.
  • Be sure the patient receives friendly and comforting support in the admission, preparation, pre-surgery and post-surgery stay in the unit.
  • Supervises and assists in the care given.
  • Supervises and assists in making the family’s stay in the areas “less stressful” as possible while also facilitating understanding of procedure being done.
  • Supervises and assists with post-operative care, as well as, discharge procedures and orders. Be sure the patient and care person (family or friend) understands the care to be given after the patient is discharged, as well as, danger symptoms which would require the patient to call his/her physician or return to the hospital ER
  • Supervises the completion of the chart and charges.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of caring for post-surgery patients and the ability to assess the patient’s condition.
  • Observes and ensures staff compliance of infection control policies.
  • Demonstrates ability to identify problems and plan solution.
  • Call patients following day inquiring about their progress concerning post-op recovery and if they were happy with the care or have suggestions for improvements.

Qualifications

Education:

 

Graduate of an accredite school of nursing

If CNOR, continuing education requirements for re-certification is 150 in 5 years

Cardia Arrhythmia course

 

Experience:

 

Surgery and/or recovery room experience

At least 2 years' experience as an RN

 

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:

 

Current RN licensure

BLS certification required

ACLS and PALS certification within one year

CNOR certification, though not required, is a benefit

Must have a copy of a diploma or offical transcript of the highest level of education

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

Must be able to communicate with physicians, all levels of hospital personnel, patients, visitors and families.

Pass pharmacology test given by NARMC with a score of 80% or above.

Post-orientation, demonstrate knowledge as to patient care, medications, ability to recognize emergency situations then take appropriate actions.

Knowledge of methods peculiar to OR nursing or complete on-the-job training

Knowledge of hospital and OR policies and procedures

Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English
