Overview

Performs skilled, specialized work in the conduct of all phases of clinical laboratory technology, including hematology, chemistry, bacteriology and blood banking.

Makes analytical diagnoses and prepares reports to aid in the treatment of diseases.

Responsible for Pre, Post, and Analytical Testing.  Responsible for aiding and ensuring that MLT’s and phlebotomists are following procedure correctly with needed documentation.  Performs procedures without supervision in at least 3 departments.  Performs proficiency testing, QC, Preventive Maintenance.  Can interpret test results as to accuracy and acceptability.  May be requested to act as General Supervisor.  Required to do tasks deemed by the Laboratory Director to advance the Laboratory and NARMC toward their goals of good patient care.

  • Responds to STAT requests immediately.
  • Consistently completes work within an acceptable time frame.
  • Able to recognize unusual test results, reporting them to the Lab Director or Pathologist for interpretation or referral.
  • Recognize critical values; document all action taken including review of audit trail, scatter plots, gram stain, etc.
  • Demonstrates good judgment in situations not covered by written or verbal instructions or precedent.
  • Review of QC and proper documentation.  Able to resolve problems and document.  Allows no lapse in Q.C.
  • Ability to conduct and establish QC procedures (tests, instruments, reagents, media).
  • Performs preventive maintenance and proper documentation.
  • Can do trouble shooting and or calibration.
  • Participation in Proficiency testing including addressing failed results.
  • Notifies area supervisor or Lab Director as soon as possible of equipment malfunctions.  Initiates Hotline calls.
  • Identifies problems that may adversely affect testing results.  Reports to GS.  Corrects problem with documentation of all to GS and Director.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work area.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work area.
  • Keeps abreast of all changes, reads, and understands procedures.
  • Skills for writing and implementing standard Lab procedures.
  • Obtains Lab Director’s approval on procedures or forms before use or change.
  • Skills for proper specimen collection including patient preparation.
  • Correct labeling, preservation, processing and storage of specimens.
  • Meditech, ordering, access, cancel, credit, misc. charges, bar code, and dawning functions.
  • Meditech material management building skills
  • Able to prepare reports for charting and chart properly (BB)
  • Uses slack work periods to engage in Lab related activities.
  • Training abilities with new employees and students.
  • Completes accuracy cross training forms and other administrative forms to Lab Director.
  • Follows procedures for receiving and logging reagents appropriately.
  • Reports their work-related deficiencies so in-house training can be planned.
  • Flexibility.  Works all shifts or departments as workload requires it.
  • Understands chain-of-authority and doesn’t circumvent it.
  • Follows NARMC polices and Lab directives.
  • Communicates conditions or practices of personnel that appear prejudicial to the welfare of patients or dangerous to the employee to the Lab Director immediately.
  • Submits statistical reports accurately and on time.
  • Help maintain inventory of supplies.  Notifies appropriate person of low supplies.
  • Provides in-servicing.
  • Reads procedure manuals within time frames.

Qualifications

Education:

 

Minimum of AA degree with 18 hours in science or MLT certified.

Must have a copy of a diploma or official transcript of the highest level of education.

 

Degrees, Licensure and/or Certifications:

 

ASCP, AMT, HHS or ISCLT

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

Typing and computer skills

Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.
