Overview

Assists in the preparation and distribution of prescription medications under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist.

Responsibilities

     

  • Has general knowledge of brand and generic names of medications
  • Understands various medication routes.
  • Understands and uses hospital formulary.
  • Understands basic abbreviations used for ordering medications.
  • Reads and interprets physician orders.
  • Enters patient orders into computer system.
  • Fills new orders for patients.
  • Files orders, narcotic sheets, packaging records, automated dispensing cabinet reports, employee prescriptions, etc.
  • Assists in processing employee prescriptions.
  • Prices employee prescriptions.
  • Packages medications not available in unit dose.
  • Fills floor stock orders.
  • Delivers the unit dose cart to patient care areas.
  • Delivers medication hourly and as needed to each floor.
  • Conducts monthly pharmacy unit inspections.
  • Replaces toner in pharmacy printers.
  • Stocks emergency medications trays and kits.
  • Cleans and maintains rooms and equipment for compounding sterile products.
  • Cleans and maintains pharmacy areas and equipment.
  • Places order with primary wholesaler.
  • Checks in orders from wholesaler.
  • Processes medications to be returned to wholesaler.
  • Administration of vaccines and immunizations upon completion of ACPE Pharmacy Technician Immunization Training through the Arkansas Pharmacist Association, if applicable.
  • Completes required continuing education to keep certification in good standing. Completes other training or certification as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

 

High School graduate or GED

Ability to obtain Pharmacy Technician Permit issued by the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy.

Ability to obtain Pharmacy Technician Permit issued by the Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy.

Must have CPhT certification or sit for national certification (PTCB) within 180 days of hire.

Must obtain CPhT certification within 365 days of hire.

Accurate typing skills and computer knowledge.

Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.

 

Preferred:

 

One year of comparable experience in a hospital pharmacy or commercial drug store

Completion of ACPE Pharmacy Technician Immunization Training through the Arkansas Pharmacist Association and appropriate internal skills check off, if applicable.
