Overview

Responsible for coordinating and providing leadership for the hospital’s safety programs, activities and educational training

Investigates or supervises the resolution of all safety related incidents, including those involving employees, visitors, patients and situations posing a threat to the hospital’s building and/or equipment

Collects, reviews and analyzes information from hospital safety programs and identifies corrective action and programs as necessary

Ensures compliance with state and federal regulatory requirements

Coordinates with Disaster Management Coordinator on all policies and procedures related to safety in Disaster Preparedness

Responsibilities

  • Ensures that the Safety Plan is reviewed, revised if necessary, and approved annually and maintains a continuous knowledge of safety policies
  • Coordinates all safety management activities of the organization.
  • Reports all actual or potential losses to risk management in compliance with hospital and risk management regulations.
  • Monitors reports of inspections performed internally and by outside agencies such as local, state, federal or voluntary accrediting agencies.
  • Develops and maintains a system to monitor the correction of identified risks and the effectiveness of implemented programs.
  • Consults with the Infection Control Nurse and Occupational Health Nurse as needed and works collaboratively with them on investigations.
  • Compiles monthly reports for the PEPS Committee regarding patient falls, medical device incidents, and product recalls. Compiles monthly reports for the Patient Care Committee regarding numbers and types of risk management issues.
  • Notifies all departments of any recall notifications and maintains documentation of these notifications. Ensures that they are addressed within 7 days. Works with Bio-Med to ensure notification reports to Patient Care and PEPS action taken.
  • Responsible for in-service training programs related to safety management. Provides initial, on-going and as needed staff training in the safety management process. Participates in new employee orientation on a monthly basis.
  • Evaluates the Safety Management Program on an ongoing basis, identifies opportunities for improvement and implements process changes as needed.
  • Consistently demonstrates understanding and compliance with the Promoting Environmental and Patient Safety Committee Bylaws.
  • Consistently demonstrates understanding and compliance with the Safety Management Plan and associated policies.
  • Demonstrates ability to keep a log of all safety related events with any associated departments and follow up.
  • Demonstrates ability to investigate all accidents and injuries and to take corrective actions as needed related to safety.
  • Evaluates and recommends items equipment, procedures, etc. which would prevent or reduce safety risks or hazards.
  • Monitors staff performance in the safety management program.
  • Serves as a consultant on safety matters and is available to all organization staff.
  • Consistently demonstrates understanding and compliance with the Life Safety Management Plan and associated policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates ability to coordinate and stage fire drills and document and maintain fire drill records, and to report fire drills to the PEPS Committee.
  • Demonstrates ability to keep a log of all incidents involving smoke, fire or other products of combustion or fire protection deficiencies, failures, and user errors.
  • Demonstrates ability to investigate each of the above items and take correct action as needed.
  • Demonstrates ability to report the above incidents and actions taken to the PEPS Committee.
  • Evaluates and recommends items, equipment, procedures, etc. which would prevent or reduce life safety risks or hazards.
  • Monitors the performance of the staff in the life safety program.
  • Maintains all life safety policies, procedures and other similar documents.
  • Demonstrates ability to provide initial, annual, and ongoing staff training in the life safety management process.
  • Ensures that identified life safety issues are immediately corrected or placed on the SOC and interim life safety measures implemented.
  • Consistently demonstrates understanding and compliance with the Security Management Plan and associated policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates ability to keep a log of all security incidents.
  • Demonstrates ability to investigate security incidents, in collaboration with the local law enforcement agencies when indicated, and to take corrective actions as needed.
  • Demonstrates ability to report security incidents and actions taken to the PEPS Committee.
  • Demonstrates ability to coordinate and stage security drills and to document and maintain security drill records and to report all drills to the PEPS Committee.
  • Evaluates and recommends items, equipment, procedures, etc. which would prevent or reduce security risks.
  • Monitors staff performance in the security management plan.
  • Maintains all security policies, procedures and other similar documents.
  • Demonstrates ability to provide initial, annual, and ongoing staff training in the security management process.
  • Serves as a consultant on security matters and is available to all hospital staff.
  • Consistently demonstrates understanding and compliance with the Utilities Management Plan and associated policies and procedures.
  • Monitors staff performance in the utilities management plan.
  • Consistently demonstrates understanding and compliance with the Medical Equipment Management Plan and associated policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates ability to keep a log of all equipment failures, malfunctions, user errors, and equipment related injuries and deaths.
  • Demonstrates ability to investigate all such equipment related incidents and to take corrective action as necessary.
  • Demonstrates ability to report all equipment related incidents and actions taken to the PEPS Committee.
  • Evaluates and recommends items, equipment, procedures, etc. which would prevent or reduce risks of medical equipment malfunctions, failures, or user errors.
  • Monitors staff performance in the medical equipment management plan.
  • Maintains all medical equipment policies, procedures, and other such documents.
  • Demonstrates ability to provide initial, annual, and ongoing staff training in the medical equipment management process.
  • Serves as a consultant on medical equipment management matters and is available to all organization staff.
  • Consistently demonstrates understanding and compliance with the Emergency Management Plan and associated policies and procedures.
  • In collaboration with the Emergency Management Subcommittee of the PEPS Committee:
  • Demonstrates ability to collaborate disaster preparedness in records and critiques.
  • Evaluates and recommends items, equipment, procedures, etc. which would improve our responses to emergencies related to safety.
  • Consistently demonstrates understanding and compliance with the Hazardous Materials Waste Management Plan and associated policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates ability to maintain and update MSDS Sheet for all hazardous chemicals used in the organization.
  • Maintains a current chemical inventory list in the Safety Office.
  • Conducts a physical inventory of hazardous substances used in the organization annually.
  • Obtains an updated list of hazardous substances used by other industries in the area annually and ensures that all emergency response personnel in the organization have the training and knowledge necessary to deal with those substances safely.
  • Ensures that a Hazardous Rating Index and Hazardous Material Identification Guide Poster is prominently displayed in all departments.
  • Ensures that appropriate and adequate spill kits are available in each department as indicated.
  • Ensures that all hazardous materials and waste are properly labeled.
  • Ensures that there is effective separation of hazardous materials and waste storage and processing areas from other areas of the facility.
  • Demonstrates ability to keep a log of all hazardous spills or exposures.
  • Demonstrates ability to investigate all hazardous spills or exposures and to take corrective action as needed.
  • Demonstrates ability to report all hazardous spills or exposures and corrective action taken to the PEPS Committee.
  • Evaluates and recommends items, equipment, procedures, etc. which would prevent or reduce risks of spills or exposures to hazardous materials or waste.
  • Monitors staff performance in the hazardous materials and waste management plan.
  • Maintains all hazardous materials and waste policies and other documentation, including required permits, licenses, and adherence to other regulations.
  • Monitors employees exposure to hazardous chemicals (nitrous oxide, glutaraldehyde, WAG, ETO, etc.)
  • Oversees Waste Anesthetic Gas Program
  • Performs OSHA hazcom training including assisting the Occupational Health Nurse with respirator fit testing as needed.
  • Demonstrates ability to provide initial, annual and ongoing staff training in the hazardous materials and waste management process.
  • Coordinates disposal of all hazardous waste according to EPA regulations
  • Serves as a consultant on hazardous materials and waste matters and is available to all organization staff.
  • Consistently demonstrates ability to use hospital’s Information System to gather information for special projects.
  • Always maintains complete confidentiality as required by North Arkansas Regional Medical Center and Arkansas Act 445 of 1977 and Arkansas Code Annotated Section 16-46-105.

Qualifications

Education:

 

High School diploma or GED required.

B.S. Industrial Engineering or related degree preferred

 

Experience:

 

Experience in accident prevention, risk management, fire protection, industrial hygiene and Safety training. 3-5 years’ experience. Hospital experience preferred.

 

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:

 

Certified Safety Professional (C.S.P.) preferred

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English

Microsoft and computer skills.

Excellent organizational skills required.
