Positions functions as a resource for the continuity of nursing care management, practice, teaching and consultation for an eight hour shift within the assigned clinical service

Under the supervision and administration of the Nurse Manager of assigned Unit, the Charge RN is responsible for the nursing care in an assigned nursing unit or a portion of a nursing unit.


  • Assists in supervision and administration of nursing care of a patient unit or total care of an assigned number of patients.
  • Supervise activities of practical nurses, aides or nursing students.
  • Orient new personnel to the nursing unit.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of nursing observations and care.
  • Communicate and make rounds with physicians providing the information they need to determine patient’s progress. Communicate patient condition changes to physician and patient family.
  • Investigate complaints, correct if possible and report findings to nurse manager or charge nurse.
  • Assess patients, prepare assessment and care plans daily.
  • Start I.V.’s, supervised or gives medications.
  • Cooperate with case manager, social worker, families and or home health care personnel to complete discharge planning. Fill out and give medications.
  • Maintains legal, institutional and professional standards.
  • Maintains a professional appearance at all times in dress and attitude.
  • Display emotional stability in dealing with patient, families, physicians and problems.
  • Be prepared at all times to handle patient emergencies.
  • Performs related duties required.
  • Provide nursing care in unit assigned and cooperate with other members of medical care team in coordinating patient care.
  • Make staff assignments
  • Knowledge of patient’s condition at all times while on duty.
  • Assist bed assigner in patient room assignment.
  • Communicate with patient and/or families in a professional and courteous manner concerning admission goals and discharge planning. Supervise or assist members of nursing to supervise patient or families in technique and method of home care after discharge.
  • Determine necessity for calling physician.
  • Evaluate personnel and make recommendations as to improvements.
  • Actively participate in committees and projects for the improvement of nursing care.
  • Manage crises. Follow the chain of command to assure patient safety when indicated.




Graduate of an accredited Nursing school                       




Three years of clinical experience 


Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:


Current RN licensure

ACLS, PALS certification encouraged.

Must have a copy of a diploma or offical transcript of the highest level of education


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English
