Overview

Coordinates the preparation and serving of meals based on general or special diets. 
Specifies dietary requirements for patients with special restrictions or nutritional needs
Typically requires certification by the ADA as a Registered Dietician.

Responsibilities

  • Performs nutritional assessments per physician order and department guidelines.
  • Documents in patient’s medical record according to established nutrition care standards.
  • Effectively interviews patient’s and evaluates information to identify nutritional problems in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span to assess age-specified needs of the patient and provide for the appropriate nutritional care.
  • Assists/reviews assessments completed on patients assigned to nutrition technician.
  • Reviews dietitian status report and physician order; responds appropriately per department standards and/or diagnosis.
  • Plans patient menus to comply with prescribed dietary modifications when needed.
  • Effectively priorities work-load for optimal time utilization.
  • Provides diet counseling to patients and/or their relatives/caregivers regarding therapy applied during and subsequent to hospitalization. Documents education appropriately.
  • Responsible for entering charges in a timely manner into Meditech or given to Accounting for appropriate entry.
  • Contributes nutrition related expertise to discussions, committees, and community programs, staff, and hospital personnel.
  • Attends rounds and planning sessions appropriate to area.
  • Established and achieves appropriate professional objectives.
  • Assumes responsibility for continuing education (15 hours annually) and professional memberships in order to maintain professional expertise in nutrition.
  • Performs other related responsibilities as requested or required

Qualifications

Education:

 

Graduate of accredited college with bachelors and/or master’s degree with a major in dietetics or nutrition. Completion of a dietetic internship or other ADA-approved equivalent.

 

Experience:

 

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:

 

Registered with Commission on Dietetic Registration or registry-eligible and Arkansas licensure for dieticians.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

Ability to read, write, speak and understand English
